Week 4 at the dojo is complete! This entire week was spent on PHP with some instruction on GIT and Ajax, both of which I assume we will get more into next week.  We also go to see the other classes projects, which we were fun to see. It did motivate me to start planning mine and get started. My project will be rebuilding the AHGL website.

The new version of Twitter Bootstrap was released! Check out the post here from the bootstrap blog.

Femgineers MeetUp and Week 3 at Coding Dojo

A lot has happened this week!I did a meetup which was awesome, we started PHP at the dojo, and I did a Hack-a-Thon that was amazing and will get its own post.

We started PHP this week, but sadly I ended up getting sick and the first day of PHP I just could not focus and retain anything. Then I missed day 2 of PHP so now I am playing catchup with the assignments.

street cred

Now the meetup! It was amazing!! The meetup, titled Building Your Street Cred, was done through the Femginners group on meetup.com. Karen Catlin gave the presentation after WealthFront gave their little background on their devs and company. It was pretty awesome, she went through how important it is to get your name out there through blogs, LinkedIn, interactive resumes among other things.  She was great and it was awesome to get to talk to her before and after her presentation. One thing we talked about was after the bootcamp I should find a charity to create a site for, and this would help with my street cred at the same time as helping a cause that I really feel needs attention.

Day 11: Coding Dojo

Yesterday was spent on ERDs and SQL SELECT.  Once our instructor had our morning lecture on ERDs it totally clicked and now much easier to do. I completed all the ERD assignments yesterday and moved on to the SQL SELECT.  I finished the basic SQL SELECT assignment with not very many issues, once I got the LEFT JOIN command it was smooth sailing, lol!  I am stuck on the intermediate one where there are two databases that need to pull data but they are not connected and have a common id, I will ask about that one.

I may not post tonight about today because I am going to a meetup called Building Street cred for females in the tech/science industry that may have gaps in their resumes. I signed up yesterday and was on the waiting list, but this morning got an email that I had been moved up. I did send an email to other girls in my class to try and sign up, as we all have a gap at this point.  I may not be able to post tomorrow as well, since I have derby practice Monday and Wednesday nights… So Thursday could be big one! We should be getting into PHP today or tomorrow.

Day 10: Coding Dojo Yellow Belt test

I totally forgot to write about this in my last post, but I think should also get its own post.

While going through coding dojo you can take these optional tests that help determine how far you are and what you may still need to work on.  This Friday we had the one on HTML, CSS and jQuery which is the yellow belt test. We four hours to replicate this website from an image and had to then send a video explaining our code.  Sadly, I did not have enough time to do the video. I got a majority of the site done, except the jQuery and a few CSS things still needed to be done. I stayed focus on one thing that was not working for way too long and only in the last hour did I say enough and moved on. the top part of my page was perfect and I would not do anything to change it, other than the jQuery I wanted to add for mouseovers.  The that I had was that the container and content divs were pushing the divs and such in my content div down instead of including them. After making CSS changes I decided I had to have an extra </div> somewhere. I did a visual check and saw nothing then I ran my html through the validator which found some errors I fixed that had nothing to do with my issue. So I said enough and started to work on the body of the page…. Then at about 5 minutes till time was up I just said screw it lets give those divs a crazy height…. that worked… I was so mad and frustrated with myself, but at least I know another thing to try in troubleshooting.

Day 8 – 10: Coding Dojo… and DORITOS!!!!

DORITOS® TAPATIO® Flavored Tortilla Chips. Just going to start off with my new favorite snack here in CA, Tapatio Doritos! They are pretty spicy and I can only eat a few at a time, but they taste great. I was first introduced to them when I visited my friend at the Facebook campus. While there we played in the arcade, sat in the bean bag chairs and watched some WFTDA.tv. It was a pretty awesome fun night!

OK… So now onto the rest of the week at Coding Dojo. I am still working on my jQuery beginner assignment, that I have turned into a gigantic project and hope to finish this weekend, and some database intro stuff.  The ERD instruction videos were really hard to follow so after some google I sent some links to everyone in the class that has helped me understand it way better.

Here is a cheesey but helpful youtube video on ERD:

and here are some other links I found helpful:

This morning I went to the fresh market by my house and ended up with some amazing cupcakes! They have an amazing little bakery and now it is time to get back to learning code 😀

Day 6 and 7: Coding Dojo

Day 6 and 7 we have been learning about jQuery which so far is pretty awesome and not too hard.  I am working on the intermediate assignment at the moment. The first part of that I had to place 8 images on a webpage where as you click each image it disappears and there is a button that you can click and they all reappear. I did this by using $(this).fadeOut(‘slow’) on $(‘img’).click(function() and for the button I used $(‘img’).fadeIn(‘slow’) on $(‘button’).click(function(). Since  there is only one button and img I was able to just use ‘button’ or ‘img’ but I would drill down better if there were more on that page. I did have one issue where I totally did not put the http: from the google api link! Now I know to always check that!

The second part of the assignment was way harder and took me awhile, I had to ask for help on this part. The second part we had to create a form with two date selections and a button that displayed the results. For this I ended up doing the following jScript:

$(‘#date’).submit(function() {
$(“#result”).html(“Your information:<br>From: ” + $(“#from”).val() + “<br>To: “+ $(“#to”).val());
$(‘#result’).css(‘border’, ‘2px solid black’)
$(‘#result’).css(‘margin-bottom’, ’30px’)
$(‘#result’).css(‘background-color’, ‘green’)

This just takes the To and From inputs and putting them in my empty div result and the rest is adding css once the submit button I have is submitted

The next part is sorting and then replacing images which I am working on tonight.

I am still amazed at how fast I can write out HTML and CSS now, and so excited when I work on a new assignment and just quickly type out the code.

Day 5: Coding Dojo

Whew! Week 1 over! well kind of…. I still have a bunch of studying to do this week and I do want to preview next weeks topic on jQuery. I am amazed at how much we have all learned and how we can all do most of our assignments with out google!!  Today I completed CSS assignment 4 in about 5 hours, and I am pretty happy with that.  I do need to be more careful with display: inline; I keep using it with float when I do not really need too and some div placements still trip me up, but I feel like I understand what I am doing wrong so that I can fix it when I go through and do CSS assignment 2 this weekend.

At the dojo I was introduced to parallax!! This stuff is amazing!!!! It is basically site that move with your phone, tablet or mouse cursor.  You can check out two sites below and it is totally worth the time to check out.:
http://wagerfield.github.io/parallax/ and http://boy-coy.com

So after this week I see things on my blog that bother me and I need to fix!! I will start working on a template for this site this weekend.

The Coding Dojo and the Time Commitment – so far

11.10.13 / Coding Dojo / Author: / Comments Off on The Coding Dojo and the Time Commitment – so far

So far this week, it is true the amount of time you have to put into this boot camp. True this week I have had to leave a little early, once because I broke my laptop…. and the other because I had to have some documents notarized to sell my car that is still in VA, but every moment I have free is spent studying.  Studying is something that I have never ever done until now and it is kinda cool all that I am learning… and how incredibly fast. I have googled so many tutorials and run through Codeacademys HTML and CSS class. I have also forced myself to go to Roller Derby practices twice this week; which, my instructor even said that attending my practices would be good to break up the constant going through this in order to refresh, but outside of those practices and the studying there has not been time for anything else. I want to make sure that I get this right and become the best I can at what we are learning and to take full advantage of this opportunity.   I am really glad that I have roller derby in my life, it is my zen time lol! When at practice all I focus on is what I am doing at that moment because of that my mind is so clear if I have an issue, outside of derby I cannot resolve, I get that reset button I need to look at the issue from a different perspective.

Anyway… My point is that it takes a lot of time dedication but it is also important you find that time to take a break and do something else.

Day 3 and Day 4: Coding Dojo

10.10.13 / Coding Dojo / Author: / Comments Off on Day 3 and Day 4: Coding Dojo

Whew!! the last two days have been hard, but I honestly feel like I have a good understanding of CSS and I can do a lot off the top of my head or I know exactly what it is I need to google in order to find that little piece I may be missing.

Day 3 was our sports day! It was actually pretty fun and I will be showing the most awesome instructor how to roller skate on sports day!! I mean what could make someone more awesome than wanting to learn roller derby?!?! Plus she is a really good instructor and knows her stuff, she is the voice you will hear on the instruction videos we get as well. The TAs we have are pretty great too, they are so helpful and definitely know the course inside and out. Anyway, back to sports day… We started out the morning with a group assignment, where we had an hour and a half to recreate a website from an image.  We were pretty close to completing ours but had some issues with the beta collaboration on http://jsfiddle.net/. The collaboration tool on that was amazing and was cool to see everyone typing in their code and watching it grow, the issue we had was when some of us would notice a mistake in someone else’s code and try to fix it.  Some of us had a little bit of a lag so as things were fixed by the other person it was also being fixed by the person working on it. That got a little frustrating so we decided to take what we had and have one person put it all together and we collaborated over the one computer together.

So for the sports section of the day we go to this park in Sunnyvale to play sports, or not (I opted for the not and just fixed my roller skates and listened to the instructor and Hawaiian guy play the ukulele) and eat lunch.  From now on I will be bringing my outdoor wheels to help my instructor, and anyone else who would like to, learn how to roller skate. Should be fun!! At about 1pm we all went back to the dojo and continued to work on our assignments for the week.  I am not going to lie but I was getting really frustrated with myself and how slow I felt I was going, but now that it is all starting to click I am glad I took the time to slow down and really try to understand what I was doing.

The assignments that we get are images of websites where we have to go ahead and create the html and CSS to look exactly like the image. I just submitted CSS assignment 3, I totally skipped 2 but I will do that one tonight and start 4 tomorrow.  It is so amazing, to me, at what we are creating. The fact that I, and we in the group assignment, can take the image and make it into something that works and is a real website!!! I am so excited for the rest of the stuff we get to learn.

Oh and on Day 3…. I totally screwed up my laptop!! So I am learning Linux and therefore that is all I have on my laptop… I was not happy with the guest account and googled how to remove it… Well I had done this same fix before and it worked perfect… well this time it did not!! After I removed the account and rebooted, it would not reboot. Well long story short all I had to do was alt + ctrl + f1 and just remove what I did in the shell… oops!

On Day 4, today, my group put together all of our code and we totally nailed it 😀  I spent the rest of the day on the bean bag chair and worked on CSS assignment 3, which I submitted just before I started writing this.

Day 2: Coding Dojo CSS

08.10.13 / Coding Dojo / Author: / Comments Off on Day 2: Coding Dojo CSS

Whew! Today has proven to be much harder for me!! Today was CSS and a lot of moving and sizing things like columns and mimicking images of sites.  I feel like I understand CSS and how it works but I just am not comfortable with it yet.  I finished my assignment for the day and did it pretty damn close to the image… everyone else is almost already done with Thursdays, so I took my laptop and sat outside to go through some Code Academy CSS classes. I am feeling more confident after just doing exercises over and over again, and it will just take some more practice for me to feel like I can do it without tons of google help 😀 It is hard for me to feel like I am slower than everyone else, but at least I am right on schedule for the class and I will get there!

Now off to clear my head with a Roller Derby scrimmage in San Jose hosted by SVRG!!!!
